Inspiring Future talent - Cyson Cymru Placement Programme

Cyson Cymru's placement programme is designed to give students meaningful, hands-on work experience. As part of the programme, our student, Carson, joined the Cyson Cymru team for a placement focused on project management within a live construction environment.

Jodie Thomas, Construction Programme Manager, said “It was a pleasure spending the afternoon with Carson on his work experience placement. I took Carson to the Newport Transporter Bridge construction site to meet the main contractor, hoping this would give him a hands-on experience of a well-managed construction site.”

During the visit, Carson was introduced to the fundamentals of construction project delivery. This included an overview of:

  • key project roles – including the client, project management team, main contractor, subcontractors, and design team
  • project objectives and scope
  • technical terminology relating to the bridge structure
  • programme timelines and key milestones
  • high-level project costs
  • risks, challenges, and mitigation approaches
  • construction methods and processes

Carson was equipped with full PPE and given access to the Newport Transporter Bridge gondola, where he observed live works in action. This included learning about steel restoration activities, as well as the specialist scaffolding and encapsulation systems used to contain materials during the process. He was also shown the extraction systems used on site to maintain safety and environmental standards.

The placement concluded with a visit to the new Visitors Centre development, where Carson received further insight into project planning and delivery in a different construction setting.
