Headteacher's fortnightly update - 23rd May
We end this half term with some sporting success, our Year 7 and 9 rugby teams both played in Newport finals this week and both won the bowl competitions. As I have previously mentioned, the Year 7 team have also qualified for the Newport Cup final in football and we look forward in anticipation of more silverware for a very talented year group. It has been great to see the increase in sporting opportunities provided to pupils this year and we look to grow this again next year. We are currently purchasing football, netball and rugby kits for pupils to wear when representing the school next year.
Year 10/11/12/ & 13 are around half way through their exams and have demonstrated real resilience and determination in preparing themselves. We have successfully run revision sessions during the school day and after school and have provided a revision area for Year 11 following exams. Our attendance for Year 11 has been excellent recently and we wish them every bit of luck as they complete their exams. This is the final day of their compulsory education which is always tinged with a little sadness for them and their teachers. We wish them all the very best in the next step of their education and look forward to celebrating their success on results day in August.
As a reminder the results days are as follows:
A-Level results day is Thursday 14th August
GCSE results day is Thursday 21st August
We will share more details about these days later in the summer term.
Mobile Phones
Just a quick reminder that mobile phones and other devices should not be seen on site and will be confiscated if they are. This approach is working very well for us in improving wellbeing, communication and reducing bullying. We now confiscate very few phones due to most pupils very much supporting the move to this policy. If pupils need to make a phone call they can access the admin hub during break or lunch or at other times in an emergency. We have also now employed two members of staff on reception so it should be easier for parents to use the school phone line to contact pupils rather than relying on use of mobile phones.
Punctuality
We have seen a dramatic improvement in pupils getting to their lessons on time. Most pupils are now in school at 8:40 in the morning and in their lessons on time every lesson. We will continue to focus on this moving forward especially with the small minority of pupils who continue to be late for lessons and/or school.
We have one remaining INSET Day this term on Friday 27th June where the school will be closed to all pupils.
Sports Day will be held on Tuesday 15th July where we are planning on widening the activities that take place to appeal to more pupils. There will be a wide range of both competitive and non-competitive activities and competitions provided for pupils to enjoy.
I hope you all have a great half term break next week and that some of the glorious weather we have been enjoying remains for a little longer. We look forward to welcoming pupils back on Monday 2nd July for an 8:40 start.
Kindest Regards,
Mr D Lawlor
