Fortnightly Update - 26th September
We have enjoyed a busy couple of weeks in school with everyone settling back into the routines very well. The changes we have made to form time in the morning, grouping of pupils across the school and the uniform have gone well. The standard of uniform has improved significantly, moving to optional blazers seems to have been well received and pupils seem to be enjoying their new groups and are making good progress.
Events
It was lovely to see so many parents at our Year 7 welcome evening last week, giving us the opportunity to build relationships with families and work together to improve the school. The feedback provided by parents has been very useful to our work.
We now look forward to welcoming pupils and families to our Open evening on Thursday 2nd October and to our Awards Evening on Thursday 23rd October.
Supporting Concerns
If your child has any concerns in school, they can report these in a number of ways. Any staff who are on duty at break or lunchtime wear a purple hi viz vest. This allows us to be easily identifiable to pupils should they need to discuss anything. They can also discuss with their form tutor or Head of Year or talk to any member of staff they know well.
Young people attending Llanwern High School who want to know more about counselling and how to get to see a counsellor can click the link below. The Newport Independent School Based Counselling Service provides your school with a counsellor who works with all pupils wishing to talk about certain problems they may be having.
Counselling is private and confidential. That means anything you tell the counsellor stays between you and the counsellor. The counsellor will tell you more about this before you start.

There is also an important section in our website for parents/carers to access support from the school or services we work closely with. The link to this is Llanwern High School - Parental Support
Estyn Visit
We are having a visit from Estyn on Monday 29th as part of a thematic report into the teaching of Science in the New Curriculum and the opportunities and challenges schools currently face. We are really pleased to have been chosen to be part of this report and look forward to the visit and discussions.
Attendance
Attendance to school continues to be positive. Please remember that if you are having any concerns regarding attendance to please contact us to allow us to work with you to support the concerns.
Sporting Success
We have had a positive start to sporting activities in the school with the Year 9 football team and the Year 11 rugby team enjoying home wins this week. I am expecting more silverware this year!
Kindest Regards,
Mr D Lawlor
