Writer John Smith visits School for Grand Opening of our Library

April 17th, 2015 by Sarah Turnham

We were honoured today to have an ex-pupil John Smith visit our school for the Grand Opening of our Library. John is a Newport born writer known for the film ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’. It took John eleven years to bring his script to the big screen which shows how perseverance and self-belief pays off. John and his writing partner Rob Sprackling came up with the idea for the script in 1999. Originally it was turned down by a Hollywood agent who was concerned that Americans wouldn’t know what a garden gnome was!  The script was then reworked and sold to Sir Elton John’s Rocket Pictures which was then picked up by Disney who produced the film. Voices for the film featured stars such as Emily Blunt, Sir Michael Caine, Ozzy Osbourne and James McEvoy.

Our pupils were very lucky to have John read one of his books ‘John Smith is not boring’ to them in our Library today. We are so thankful to John for taking time out of his busy life to spend time with our pupils and to also officially open our School Library.
